Cindy Sherman Influence

To create a project that is in honour of a photographer I chose Cindy Sherman. Her inspiring work of Untitled Film Stills from 1977 - 1980 is in reference to women in films, playing the leading roles in imaginary films, but with familiar archetypes such as women who are vulnerable, distraught, longing. or on the run. There is no one in particular that Sherman impersonates, instead, her characters are ones that are easily recognisable but an imagined world.

My project was to chose a photographer whose work was inspiring and embed their conceptions into a body of work. I took direct inspiration form Sherman’s images to construct a narrative of my own archetypes, replicating Shermans’ sense of being a woman.

My 12 images are my life and what I have taken from recognising my own archetypes in relation to Shermans’ Untitled Film Stills.

These images are self portraits, not a representation of me, but of fictional characters.
